Eastman Kodak Swings to 3Q Profit

In the first nine months of the year, Kodak earned $461 million, or $1.60 a share, compared with a loss of $617 million, or $2.15 a share, in the first three quarters of 2006. But sales fell at Kodak to $7.2 billion from $7.57 billion -- reflecting the $2.35 billion sale in April of its 110-year-old health-imaging business. .

Little things can mean a lot for savvy 2007 tax filers

WASHINGTON For 2007 income taxes, it's the little things that count. Small deductions here, a credit there, a bit of help for homeowners caught in the mortgage crisis all add up to tax savings for savvy filers.

But a big thing Congress' last-minute fix of the alternative minimum tax has delayed filing for several million early birds who usually submit returns months ahead of the April 15 deadline.

Nick Robinson's Newslog

Suppose the Northern Rock crisis is closed without loss of any taxpayer or depositors money and perhaps some interest better than the yield on Government Bonds? This is quite likely at present but by no means certain. Suppose that the missing benefit CDs turn up in a pile of undelivered mail and that the lesson learnt is for governments to have fail-safe data storage systems in future? That too is not unlikely either.

It is far too early to suggest that the errors of others - Northern Rock directors and the shareholders who elected them, and complacent senior civil servants - will undermine Darling. Nor is it sufficient to blame politicos for the appointment of dodgy people. Civil servants are not selected by Ministers.

People gain reputations for dealiing with unexpected events in an effective manner.

Harry Redknapp is top of list to take charge of madhouse at Newcastle

Newcastle United's problems stem from not having the right kind of players, in recent years they seem to have attracted all the troublemakers. Lee Bowyer and Joey Barton are the two obvious offenders, which always undermines the team. Also, their inability to qualify for the Champions League has really hurt them. The best players all want to play in the Champions League, plain and simple. Also, getting a team accustomed to playing at the highest level increases a club's chances of winning a championship. Newcastle United's goal should be to qualify for Europe, preferably the Champions League, and to do this consistently. Don't try to run before you can walk! Harry Redknapp knows how to get the best out of his players as we have seen at Portsmouth, but I will take time and money to bring in the right kind of results.

NZ stocks: Shares recover early losses, close down 1.8 percent

The sharemarket continued to slide today, although it managed a small recovery from early losses over 2 per cent amid a grim day on global markets.

The benchmark top-50 index closed down 1.8 per cent, or 65.61 points, at 3664.4, on turnover totalling $111.3 million.

The tone of the local market was set by another ugly session on Wall Street, in which key indices slumped 2 to 3 per cent. The top-50 has now lost around 10 per cent in its 12-day losing streak. 'Some had small movements, others had bigger, a lot of it depended on liquidity in stocks,' said Stephen Wright of ASB Securities.

Top stock Telecom was among the few stocks to rise, up a cent at 414. It had earlier hit a 16-month low of 400. 'It seemed that there was some local institutional support for Telecom in the 400/410 region, relating to their restructuring, their dividend, their (financial) announcement on February 8,' Mr Wright said.
